Chael Gets Caught in the Spider's Web
By: Dux

Chael Sonnen was just a little over a minute from making UFC history on Saturday night. He had put an absolute beating on the reigning champion for four rounds and some change. He managed to drop Anderson with his striking at one point, but mostly his offense consisted of ground and pound. He hit him with elbows, fists to the face, fists to the body, shoulder punches, and just absolutely put a clinic on him.
Anderson also landed some good shots in the stand-up, he made Sonnen wobble and shoot for a take down a few times. He even had some pretty good elbows from the bottom, which caused Chael to bleed as he usually does. However, if you're an Anderson fan, it was probably disheartening to see him getting pulverized for 23 minutes. The guy has one of the toughest chins and can take some serious punishment, all credit goes to him for coming out that 5th round and slapping on that triangle with an arm bar. His opponent was almost out of the submission too, and actually escaped the triangle, but left his arm hanging out there for the arm bar. It was a good come back, with a good main event to top off what was an absolutely stunning MMA event.
Another impressive win that night came from Matt Hughes. It seemed as though the fight was going to go the distance, and it would be a pitter-patter close decision. Almeida was actually landing a few more effect strikes, a nice counter to an inside leg kick from Hughes, and then he had a nice little flurry a little bit after. Hughes eventually landed a nasty left hook that wobbled Almeida and dropped him. Almeida made the mistake of trying to wrestle with Hughes while rocked and got his neck squeezed until he passed out.
Matt Hughes shows that despite his age, he's still in the game. He proved why he's one of the best and a UFC hall of famer with a great power-choke victory over a decorated grappler.
There's a Strikeforce Challengers event this Friday, I'll be back after the event to write about it. Enjoy the fights!
