Or perhaps a more fitting name for this event would be, "Diaz vs. Noons 1 1/2", considering how early the first one was stopped. For those of you who did not see their first scrap, it was ended by the doctor due to a cut above Diaz's eye. The cut was huge and gushing blood all over his eyes, so it wasn't a controversial stoppage or anything of that sort. The only controversy was that these two fighters had barely gotten started before it was over.
The first five minutes of the first fight had all of the signs of a war in the making. Neither fighter was completely outclassing the other, and in they both had their moments in the fight. Noons won that round, I would say, edging Diaz out a bit by knocking him down with a punch. However, Diaz did land a few solid shots on Noons.
One thing I immediately thought after watching the fight, was how much KJ Noons has improved since that bout. His hands look more crisp and his defense is much tighter than it was in 2007. Diaz is going to have a hard time peppering Noons tonight, so I suspect his gameplan will be based around relentless take downs.
It should be a good show tonight. The first one had fireworks in the first 5 minutes, and the two fighters were just getting really comfortable fighting one another before the unfortunate cut. The cut came as a result of Noons kneeing Diaz in the face as he shot in for a take down. We should expect Noons to be timing the take downs and looking for a similar counter tonight. Hopefully, though, this one does not get stopped due to a cut. Hopefully the fighters get to put on a 3-round war or someone is stopped in spectacular fashion.
