Last week Anderson Silva stepped into the octagon to face former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort. Many considered this his most formidable opponent since Dan Henderson. However, Anderson Silva thought otherwise. In interviews he was asked if he thought Belfort was the best striker he's ever faced, and he responded with "no."
He showed us on the night of the fight why he thought this. The fight started off slow, with neither man looking to engage early. The two combatants squared off for almost a full round, measuring each other up and throwing feints to read the other's reactions. Belfort landed a few good shots and even scored a take down on The Spider. He could not do anything with it, as Silva quickly sprung back up to his feet.
A few moments after that, the kick that everyone will remember and talk about for a good while happened. Anderson Silva did a front kick to Vitor's face. Belfort obviously thought the kick was coming to the body, and the foot smashed directly on to his chin. The former light-heavyweight champion crumpled to the floor like a deck of cards. Anderson walked over top of him and landed some precise powerful blows that put The Phenom out for good.
The arena was deafening as everyone in the Mandalay Bay was on their feet cheering on Anderson Silva. He proved that he's one of the best fighters to ever enter the octagon last week, and he will continue to do so as long as he's fighting.
